5 Ways to Improve Your Student Athletes Attitude

Before you can expect to be successful on the gridiron, court, or any other playing surface you strive to have a positive attitude, good work habits and respectable character. How you obtain this is an entirely different matter. Surprisingly most bad attitudes start at home. That's right, in your house, under your roof.

How many times have you rewarded your child for improper behaviour? How many times has your son or daughter brought home a bad report card, not finished a required chore or displayed poor behaviour and you still bought those new Jordan's? If theirs not consequences for your student athletes behaviour, how can you not expect for these attributes to continue? It's not up to a coach, counsellor, or mentor to figure this out; it's your responsibility as a parent to right the ship. You must take proactive measures to discourage this behaviour.

Here are some things you can;

1) Reward excellent behaviour, but issue consequences for unacceptable behaviour.

2) Constantly remind your student that it's not about them, it's always about the team.

3) Never be your son's or daughter's cheerleader, always be their parent.

4) Remember it's not what you say; it's what you do that your student will emulate.

5) Remind your student athlete that it's important not to get to high or down on them when it comes to participating in sports. The more your student athletes participate in sports the more they will encounter both.

These are only a few examples of how to improve your Student Athletes attitudes, but it's a great start. Having worked with various prep, collegiate, and professional athletes over the years, I've realized that being the fastest, quickest or strongest athletes was only a part of the equation. I discovered where most athletes failed were with their particular mind-sets. How they interacted with their teammates, responded to constructive criticism, and how they handled failure.
Most athletes that are fortunate enough to receive athletic scholarships were usually the most talented at their school, on their teams and were often given preferential treatment. Most usually were not expected to abide the same rules that their teammates had to live by. Sadly, this treatment will in most cases manifest itself over the Jobs of college athletes.

But there's no need for doom and gloom. If you apply the five steps that were mentioned earlier and you use them daily, you can help your College Athletes Jobs avoid these potential pitfalls.
